Financing Your Degree
When evaluating how to pay for your master’s degree, you may pursue a number of resources available to you, including tuition assistance from your employer, scholarships, and student loan programs. Please note that this program does not accept outside agency tuition credits that your company may have received from Syracuse University. You may be eligible to apply for the following to assist in paying your tuition:
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans:
Students are potentially eligible to receive up to $20,500 in Direct Unsubsidized Loans per academic year, regardless of personal or spousal income.
Federal Direct PLUS Loans:
All graduate students are potentially eligible to apply for Graduate PLUS Loan funding each academic year. This credit-based loan can be used to cover tuition and fees, and provide you with funding for living expenses up to the cost of attendance.
Private Loans:
Students who require additional assistance may apply for education loans through private lenders.
Scholarships:
Students may be eligible to apply for outside scholarships.
Veterans Benefits:
Students are eligible to explore the use of VA Education Benefits to fund their graduate program. For more information, contact the VA or the Veterans’ Resource Center on campus.
Employer Sponsorship:
Check with your employer’s personnel or human resources division regarding tuition sponsorship.
Employer Sponsorship
One of the ways that students fund their degree program is through employer sponsorship. While your company may not advertise that this funding is available, they may have funds available to you if you put in a request.
Beyond funding, employers can also support your education by adding flexibility to your schedule and providing new challenges and opportunities to take advantage of your growing skill set. Having a scheduled conversation to discuss your professional development goals is a great idea to help foster support, in whatever form it may take.

Tips for Securing Employer Support
Research Company Policies:
Reach out to your human resources department, or speak with employees who have requested educational support from your company.
Know Your Program:
Syracuse University provides an employer benefit guide outlining program benefits and highlights, but you should know the program’s full cost, credit structure, time commitments, and core benefits when speaking with your employer about support.
Frame the Request:
What are your organization’s specific needs? How can earning a master’s from the Syracuse University College of Engineering and Computer Science help your company address those needs? Demonstrate how the degree will provide both immediate and long-term returns to your employer.
Understand the Implications:
Employer support may come with policies, regulations, and expectations that employers want to discuss. Employers may have questions about tax implications and additional funding opportunities, and may require commitment to a minimum employment period with the organization.
Be Flexible:
Some organizations may be willing to fully fund your education, while others may only provide partial support. Often, employers set guidelines, such as minimum GPA requirements or demonstration of new skills. They will want to understand how being enrolled in the program will affect job expectations or time-off requests. We encourage you to refer your employer to admissions@engineeringonline.syr.edu or an online information session if they have any questions about the program.
