William Sutton
Journalism Innovation
Director of Digital Media, The Press News Group
Why did you apply to the online M.S. in Communications program?
I’ve always wanted to pursue my master’s degree, but not at the expense of a career I was building at a company I truly believed in. There were no local programs, and I didn’t want to move. So when I saw an old mentor of mine discussing the online M.S. in Communications program on Facebook with another prospective student, I immediately checked it out. After discussing it with a few people, I decided to apply. The program just seemed perfect. It’s all online, so I don’t have to move, and it’s with Newhouse, which I have tremendous respect and admiration for. I have always dreamed of being a Newhouse student. And the program focuses on new digital technologies—a perfect fit for my current position.
What excites you most about starting your master’s degree?
I can’t wait to get started. I fully expect to catch up with all of the new and emerging trends and technologies that have exploded across the industry in the past few years. I aim to be in a position to help shape the future of the industry as it continues to expand and change.
What is your intended specialization and why?
Journalism Innovation. I’ve been a journalist for nearly two decades and love it. I believe in journalism, and have a keen interest in helping to maintain its standards in the future as it progresses and changes to new forms with new technologies.
What are your career aspirations upon graduation?
I don’t envision leaving my current position, but hope to be better engaged and prepared to lead the company into the future of digital journalism. At the same time, I would like to explore teaching media to future generations of journalists in some capacity.
