William Sutton

Journalism Innovation

Director of Digital Media, The Press News Group

Why did you apply to Communications@Syracuse?

I’ve always wanted to pursue my master’s degree, but not at the expense of a career I was building at a company I truly believed in. There were no local programs, and I didn’t want to move. So when I saw an old mentor of mine discussing the Communications@Syracuse program on Facebook with another prospective student, I immediately checked it out. After discussing it with a few people, I decided to apply. The program just seemed perfect. It’s all online, so I don’t have to move, and it’s with Newhouse, which I have tremendous respect and admiration for. I have always dreamed of being a Newhouse student. And the program focuses on new digital technologies—a perfect fit for my current position.

What excites you most about starting your master’s degree?

I can’t wait to get started. I fully expect to catch up with all of the new and emerging trends and technologies that have exploded across the industry in the past few years. I aim to be in a position to help shape the future of the industry as it continues to expand and change.

What is your intended specialization and why?

Journalism Innovation. I’ve been a journalist for nearly two decades and love it. I believe in journalism, and have a keen interest in helping to maintain its standards in the future as it progresses and changes to new forms with new technologies.

What are your career aspirations upon graduation?

I don’t envision leaving my current position, but hope to be better engaged and prepared to lead the company into the future of digital journalism. At the same time, I would like to explore teaching media to future generations of journalists in some capacity.
