Whitman does not charge online students fees typically associated with on-campus programs, such as health fees. Textbook, travel, and housing costs are each student’s responsibility, in addition to a one-time technology fee.
Payment arrangements for tuition and fees are required at the time of registration each term. Syracuse University offers direct billing or deferred billing for students sponsored by select companies. Payment plans are available to those students who are financially responsible for their education.
Degree Financing Options
There are a number of financial resources available to students, including student loan programs, scholarships, and tuition assistance from employers.
Loans and Scholarships
Students may be eligible to apply for the following to assist in paying for their tuition:
- Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans: Students are potentially eligible to receive up to $20,500 in Direct Unsubsidized Loans per academic year, regardless of personal or spousal income.
- Federal Direct PLUS Loans: All graduate students are potentially eligible to apply for Graduate PLUS Loan funding each academic year. This credit-based loan can be used to cover tuition and fees and provide students with funding for living expenses up to the cost of attendance.
- Private Loans: Students who require additional assistance may apply for education loans through private lenders.
- Scholarships: Students may be eligible to apply for scholarships offered through Syracuse University.
- Veterans Benefits: Students can explore the use of VA education benefits to fund their graduate program. For more information, contact the VA or the Veterans Resource Center on campus.
Employer Support
Many employers are eager to help their employees develop the leadership and technical skills needed to make a greater impact on their organization, and some provide significant resources toward higher education. To help students secure financial support from their current employer, Whitman has developed some tips and resources that may be useful.
Download the Employer Benefit Guide for your program of interest, which outlines program features and requirements and highlights the benefits to employers of supporting their employees’ education.
Tips for Securing Employer Support
- Research Company Policies: Students should reach out to their human resources department or other employees who have requested support to see what precedents exist.
- Know the Program: While the Employer Benefit Guide outlines program benefits and highlights, students should demonstrate to their employer that they have taken the time to familiarize themselves with Syracuse University’s offerings. Specifically, students should be prepared to outline the full cost, credit structure, time commitments, and core benefits of the program.
- Frame the Request: When preparing to request sponsorship, students should think about specific needs their organization has and how earning a Syracuse University degree will help them address those needs. Students should be sure to demonstrate both immediate and long-term returns their employers will receive after providing sponsorship.
- Understand the Implications: While employer support can be incredibly beneficial, it also carries with it a number of policies, regulations, and expectations that employers may want to discuss. Employers may have questions about tax implications and additional funding opportunities, and may require commitment to a minimum employment period with the organization.
- Be Flexible: Some organizations may be willing to fully fund an employee’s education, while others may only provide partial support. Often, employers set guidelines, such as minimum GPA requirements or demonstration of new skills. They will want to understand how being a student will impact any job expectations or time-off requests. Students are encouraged to direct their employers to the director of recruitment or an online information session if they have any questions about the program.
